Chinese humanoid robots made headlines at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing by reportedly breaking human athletic records, including Usain Bolt’s 100-meter sprint record. According to the organisers, more than 2,000 humanoid robots took part in the Olympics-style event last week. The five-day World Humanoid Robot Games showcased China’s rapid advances in robotics, featuring 51 events and more than 1,000 competitions in running, table tennis, and football. Taking place at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, the games coincided with the 2026 World Robot Conference, where around 3,000 robotic products were displayed. Organizers and manufacturers said Chinese humanoid robots also surpassed human world records during the opening ceremony. A humanoid robot reportedly completed the 100-meer sprint in 9.39 seconds, surpassing Jamaican Usain Bolt’s human world record of 9.58 seconds set in 2009. Another robot achieved a 2.88-meter standing high jump, exceeding last year’s humanoid record and Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor’s 2.45-meter human world record set in 1993. The two record-breaking robots were developed by Beijing-based X-Humanoid, while Chinese smartphone company, Honor said its humanoid robot recorded an even faster 100-meter time of 9.32 seconds during a pre-event trial. Despite these advances, experts said humanoid robots remain largely focused on demonstrations and research, with widespread real-world use still some way off. Spectators, however, expressed excitement over the technology’s rapid development. Beijing resident and education worker Li Yanfeng said humanoid robots are “evolving rapidly.” This year’s games feature participants from 16 countries, including Germany, Japan and the United States, with events ranging from weightlifting to tug of war.
