Justin Greaves and Hayley Matthews made history when they captured the ICC Player of the Month awards for July. It was the first time both honours went to West Indies players in the same month and only the fifth occasion since 2021 that players from the same country claimed both awards. Greaves won the award ahead of England’s Harry Brook and Bangladesh’s Tanzid Hasan, after outstanding performances in consecutive Test series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, where he was named Player-of-the-Series. He scored a superb 180 against Sri Lanka to help West Indies secure a draw and series victory, before producing a career-best five-wicket haul against Pakistan in Trinidad. Greaves claimed seven wickets across seven consecutive overs in the match, helping West Indies bowl Pakistan out for 120 and seal a 90-run victory. “I have had a memorable month playing at home, and to have contributed with both bat and ball against Sri Lanka and Pakistan has been particularly special for me," Greaves said. “Having impactful performances in Test cricket is always something I will cherish, especially when they come in front of our home fans,” Greaves added. Meanwhile, West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews claimed the women’s award over England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sri Lanka’s Harshitha Samarawickrama. She scored 265 runs across three matches, including an unbeaten 159 and a century, while also taking seven wickets as West Indies completed a 3-0 series sweep. Matthews finished the series with a batting average of 132.50 and a strike rate of 117.25, highlighting her impact as an all-rounder. “I am thrilled to win the ICC Player of the Month award once again. It is just as special as the previous ones, and I hope it inspires me to keep raising my standards, contributing to the West Indies, and winning more such awards in the future,” Matthews said. “It is an exciting time for women’s cricket, with more attention and interest than ever before. I am proud to contribute to its growth through my performances and thank the ICC for its continued support of the women’s game.”
