No fewer than 30 people are feared dead after a military airstrike reportedly hit a weekly market in Jilli village, located along the border between Borno and Yobe states, on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at the popular Jilli Market between the Gubio and Geidam axis, throwing traders and residents into panic as explosions rocked the busy trading centre during peak commercial activity.

According to reports obtained from Punch Ng, a councillor in the area confirmed the casualty figures, stating that the strike was carried out by military aircraft.

“From the information available to us, it was an airstrike. Over 30 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 20 were hospitalised,” he said.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the attack happened around 4:00 p.m. while trading was ongoing, with several fighter jets reportedly involved in the operation.

One witness claimed to have seen dozens of bodies during recovery efforts. “I counted 56 corpses myself; more bodies are still being recovered,” he said.

Sources further suggested that the strike may have been aimed at suspected Boko Haram insurgents allegedly gathered in the area.

However, the bombs reportedly hit the crowded market instead.

The weekly market is known to attract traders from surrounding communities, including Gubio, Chiweram, Benisheikh, Gurokayeya, and Geidam.

Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Abdulsalam Dahiru (retd.), noted that Jilli village falls within Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Air Force had yet to release an official statement on the incidents.
