In 1915, D.W. Griffith released a silent film that would go on to become one of the most destructive narratives in American history. Birth of a Nation depicted Black men as violent predators, Black women as either loyal servants or sexual threats to white purity, and the Ku Klux Klan as heroes. It was the first feature film ever screened at the White House. It helped revive a dormant KKK to over 4 million members. And the man who would go on to found MGM Studios made his first fortune distributing it. But the story doesn't end there. In 1920, filmmaker Oscar Micheaux released Within Our Gates as a direct rebuttal — and that film was nearly lost forever, only rediscovered in Spain in the 1970s. The most important counter-narrative to the most damaging film in American history spent decades in a foreign archive while the lie continued to circulate freely. This video breaks down what Birth of a Nation was, what it did, who profited, who fought back, and why its impact is still felt in American culture and politics today. For a lot of people in this country, Black history begins at slavery. But American history, narratively, begins with Birth of a Nation — whether they know it or not.
