    In 1980, Dave Winfield signed a groundbreaking 10-year, $23 million deal with the New York Yankees, making him the highest-paid player in sports at the time. But what should have been a triumphant moment planted the seeds of one of baseball's most infamous feuds. George Steinbrenner, who believed he'd agreed to a $16 million deal, was furious when a cost-of-living clause ballooned the contract to $23 million — and he never forgave Winfield for it. The bad blood festered for years, culminating in Steinbrenner paying mob-connected Bronx gambler Howard Spira $40,000 to dig up dirt on Winfield and his charitable foundation. The scheme backfired spectacularly, leading to Steinbrenner being banned from baseball by Commissioner Fay Vincent in 1990. For Winfield, the wounds still feel fresh. Here, he explains.
