When did “getting the bag” become enough to excuse almost anything? In this 8 At The Table conversation, the panel argues that what looks like a decline in standards may actually be a symptom of something much bigger: the increasing difficulty of achieving financial stability in America. Previous generations could often build an ordinary middle-class life with one or two steady incomes. Today, housing, family expenses and the overall cost of living have changed what financial security looks like—and that pressure may also be changing what people value. The conversation asks whether society has become more willing to overlook embarrassing behavior, questionable decisions and even abandoning your community as long as the person is successful and “getting the bag.” The discussion even turns to O.J. Simpson as an example of the complicated relationship between individual success, money, identity and community. Is society simply losing its standards—or are people adapting to an economy where financial survival and success have become harder to achieve? Has chasing money changed our values, or are people simply doing what they have to do to survive?
