The modern NBA moves fast, but few could have predicted the sheer velocity of the tectonic shifts that hit the Dallas Mavericks.

Two weeks after the franchise hired former Toronto Raptors architect Masai Ujiri as team president, the other shoe has officially dropped. The Dallas Mavericks and head coach Jason Kidd have parted ways, bringing a definitive end to his five-season tenure on the sideline.

While the team’s public press release framed the split as a sterile, “mutual decision,” the reality behind the scenes paints a far more dramatic picture. According to a league source, the breakdown wasn’t about a multi-year audit or differences in rebuilding strategies. The source shared simply and directly:

    “He wanted out.”

The writing had been on the wall for weeks. Reports recently surfaced that Kidd had attempted a massive internal power grab, seeking an expanded role that would have effectively granted him total control as head coach, general manager, and team president all rolled into one. When Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont instead hired Ujiri to spearhead the basketball operations, Kidd’s ambitions were thwarted.

With Ujiri taking over a 26-56 squad at a crossroads following “the trade heard around the world” that sent Luka Dončić to the Lakers, a separation felt inevitable. Kidd had no interest in sticking around for a slow, methodical culture audit—he wanted absolute control, and when he didn’t get it, he chose to walk away from four years and over $40 million left on his contract extension.

    What’s Next for J-Kidd? A Twin Cities Mega-Rumor

Now that Kidd is a coaching free agent, the NBA rumor mill is spinning at a dizzying pace. While vacancies in Chicago, Orlando, and Portland are active, the most explosive whisper in league circles involves a hypothetical scenario that would fundamentally alter the balance of power in the Western Conference.

Imagine a world where Jason Kidd becomes the next head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves—and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo follows him to the Twin Cities.

It sounds like pure fan fiction, but when asked about the possibility, a trusted league fixture shared an eye-opening perspective: “Not out of the question.”

Kidd has long maintained a desire to coach Giannis again, and the Greek Freak still holds a deep respect and desire to be coached by Kidd, tracing back to their time together in Milwaukee. If Minnesota decides to pivot from their current leadership, backing the truck up for Kidd could be the ultimate recruiting tool to lure Antetokounmpo away from the Bucks.

Interestingly, Minnesota isn’t the only place where Kidd has been courted with executive power. Sources indicate that Kidd is incredibly friendly with Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon. Through backchannels, feelers were put out to Kidd concerning the notion of coaching the Blazers while simultaneously maintaining a powerful front-office role.

While Kidd initially declined the overtures because he was making more money as the head man in Dallas, the landscape has completely changed. With no job and a burning desire for a dual coach/executive role, one has to wonder if Kidd will seriously reconsider Dundon’s offer in Portland if the Minnesota dream doesn’t materialize.

The Kyrie Irving Complication: Is Minnesota Calling?

If Kidd’s departure wasn’t enough, the status of Kyrie Irving adds another layer of volatile complexity to the Mavericks’ future.

Irving secured a three-year, $119 million contract extension last summer after helping guide Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals. However, his status is severely complicated by a torn ACL that completely sidelined him for the 2025-26 season. While public indications suggest Irving genuinely loves Dallas, enjoys playing for the Mavericks, and wants to stay, Masai Ujiri’s arrival signals that no one is untouchable as the franchise considers a total rebuild around reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.

Minnesota is watching closely. The Timberwolves are aggressively searching for an elite, veteran point guard to pair with franchise cornerstone Anthony Edwards. While many league insiders suggested Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant was the target, sources close to Morant have repeatedly shut that down, reiterating his commitment to Memphis.

Instead, Kyrie Irving’s name is being loudly whispered. A well-placed and respected NBA fixture shared a firm belief that a healthy Irving is the exact missing piece to get Minnesota over the Conference Finals hump:

“Irving in Minnesota makes the Timberwolves a contender. The combination of Anthony Edwards and Kyrie Irving is potent enough to legitimately contend in the West.”

Crucially, the interest is mutual. Anthony Edwards is reportedly privately sharing that he would love teaming up with Irving in Minnesota, advocating heavily for the move behind the scenes. “Ant has a mutual respect for Kyrie and for what he’s done in this league,” a Timberwolves source with knowledge of the situation noted. “If Kyrie came, it would be sweet.”

The logistics are incredibly dense. Both Dallas and Minnesota are operating over the first salary apron, meaning a blockbuster deal would require massive financial gymnastics, significant draft capital from an asset-depleted Wolves team, and likely a third team to facilitate. Furthermore, the Houston Rockets are also actively monitoring Irving’s availability, ready to spark a bidding war.

But if Ujiri decides the post-Luka era requires completely tearing the house down to build exclusively around Cooper Flagg, shipping Irving to Minnesota to pair with Edwards could send immediate shockwaves through the league—provided they can convince Irving to waive his no-trade clause.

The Mavericks wanted a new direction, and Jason Kidd wanted out. Both got their wish today, but the fallout from this divorce is only just beginning.
