When I sat down with Kristin Chenoweth on Finding Your Roots, we uncovered a delightful surprise buried in the pages of an 1850 Texas newspaper. There, in an advertisement from Galveston’s Semi Weekly Journal, was evidence of one of Kristin’s enterprising ancestors promoting his oyster house by invoking the name of the world-famous soprano Jenny Lind, the “Swedish Nightingale.” Whether Lind ever set foot in Galveston is doubtful—but Kristin’s ancestor clearly understood the art of publicity. What we discovered next was even more revealing: this same man ran a restaurant, raised a family, and served as a lighthouse keeper. In him we see the qualities that so often echo across generations—ambition, adaptability, and a bit of entrepreneurial flair. It is always remarkable to see how the spirit of performance and perseverance can travel through time, resurfacing in the life of a Broadway star nearly two centuries later. 📺 Watch Season 12, Episode 8 of Finding Your Roots on PBS. #FindingYourRoots #HenryLouisGatesJr #KristinChenoweth #PBS #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #JennyLind #Broadway #AmericanHistory #roots This program is made possible by viewers like you.
