Arne Slot has acknowledged Liverpool will need to offload players this summer if they are to adequately replace Mohamed Salah following their Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds were eliminated after a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, with Ousmane Dembele scoring twice to seal progression for the French side.

    Slot outlines transfer constraints

Speaking after the match, Slot made it clear that Liverpool’s recruitment strategy will be dictated by financial balance rather than aggressive spending.

“I think much is being said recently… that the club is in a transition,” Slot said. “We’ve sold eight to ten players to recoup money to sign four, five, six very talented and good players.

“Now we are losing Mo and Andy Robertson on a free transfer as we lost Trent [Trent Alexander-Arnold] on a free transfer, and this model of the club means we have to sell usually to buy.

“It’s a big challenge… and it’s going to be a challenge in the summer again.”

Salah, 33, is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season, while Robertson is also expected to depart, compounding Liverpool’s need for reinforcements.

    Rooney rejects ‘transition’ narrative

Former England captain Wayne Rooney dismissed Slot’s framing of the situation, arguing Liverpool should not be described as a club in transition.

“I think you’re talking about rebuilds… they were champions last season,” Rooney said.

“They spent an awful amount of money to try and make the squad better… you shouldn’t be talking about a rebuild when you’ve just won the Premier League.”

Rooney also pointed to the impact of key departures, including Alexander-Arnold, suggesting recruitment decisions and injuries have contributed to the current downturn.
