When I sat down with Rhiannon Giddens on Finding Your Roots, our conversation turned to a question that lies at the heart of so many American stories: what does it mean to belong? Rhiannon spoke candidly about growing up as a mixed-race woman—navigating a world that often demanded clear definitions where none truly exist. She reflected on being questioned, on feeling not “enough” of one thing or another, and on the long journey toward defining identity on her own terms. At the center of that journey was music—particularly the banjo. Through its history and its deep roots in Black culture, Rhiannon found a sense of grounding that transcended labels. In reclaiming that lineage, she discovered a way to embrace the fullness of her heritage. As she reminds us, identity is not something to be proven—it is something to be lived. 📺 Watch Finding Your Roots Season 12 on PBS. #FindingYourRoots #HenryLouisGatesJr #RhiannonGiddens #PBS #Identity #MixedRace #BlackHistory #AmericanMusic #Banjo #Genealogy #roots Enjoy full episodes of your favorite PBS shows anytime, anywhere with the free PBS app: https://to.pbs.org/2QbtzhR FOLLOW PBS: Facebook: / pbs X: / pbs Instagram: / pbs TikTok: / pbs Threads: https://www.threads.net/@pbs FOLLOW HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR.
