A man has stirred reactions online after revealing a dispute with his wife and her family over funeral expenses for his late father-in-law.

    Funeral contribution sparks marital tension

The story, which surfaced on April 13, 2026, highlights growing concerns around financial expectations placed on in-laws during burial arrangements.

According to the man, his wife’s family demanded that all sons-in-law contribute a fixed sum of ₦500,000 each, despite the deceased having five biological sons.

    Family backlash deepens conflict

The man explained that his refusal to comply with the set amount led to tension within his marriage and strained relations with his in-laws.

“I told my wife I’m sorry, but it’s not my responsibility to bury her father when his own sons are alive. I offered to give what I can, but I won’t be forced to pay a fixed amount,” he said.

He added, “They called me rude and said they don’t want my money again. Since then, my wife has stopped speaking to me, and I feel like I’m being punished for standing my ground.”

The situation has sparked debate on social media, with many Nigerians sharing differing opinions on cultural expectations surrounding burial rites.

In recent years, similar disputes have emerged, particularly as rising funeral costs and economic pressures continue to strain family relationships across the country.
