Born on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey, Zoë Yadira Saldaña Nazario grew up in Queens, New York City.

However, when she was nine years old, her father was killed in a vehicle accident, and she and her family relocated to the Dominican Republic. She studied dance at the Ecos Espacio de Danza studio. When she was 17, she returned to New York City and started performing in youth theatre companies.

    Career

Saldaña made two minor cameos on Law & Order in 1999 before starring in Center Stage, a film about ballet students in New York City, in 2000. She then acted in several teen films, including Get Over It (2001) and Britney Spears’ Crossroads (2002), before playing a supporting role in the more well-known film Drumline (2002).

Saldaña played a female pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and an immigration official in Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal (2004), starring Tom Hanks as a guy forced to live in an airport terminal. Saldaña’s subsequent roles were limited to minor films and television shows.

Saldaña had two notable roles in 2009. She was cast as a lieutenant. She played Uhura in the film Star Trek, which reinvented the characters from the original TV series, and Neytiri—a high-ranking member of the Na’vi, a humanoid race indigenous to the exoplanetary moon Pandora—in James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster Avatar using motion capture.

Both films were big hits. Saldaña played Uhura again in Star Trek into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016). She also starred as the green-skinned warrior princess Gamora in the sci-fi/superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), a character she reprised in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).

She played Rosemary in the 2014 television miniseries adaptation of Ira Levin’s suspense novel Rosemary’s Baby and controversially portrayed singer Nina Simone in the poorly received biopic Nina (2016).

Her other film credits at the moment include the thrillers Live by Night (2016) and I Kill Giants (2017), as well as the horror comedy Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020).

In 2021, Saldaña lent her voice to the animated musical film Vivo, including songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the TV drama Maya and the Three, about a Mesoamerican warrior princess.

The next year, she starred in David O. Russell’s period satire Amsterdam, the action comedy The Adam Project, and the Netflix limited series romance From Scratch.

In 2022, Saldaña played an undocumented immigrant in the drama The Absence of Eden, directed and co-written by Marco Perego. She and Perego have been married since 2013 and have three children.
