Lionel Messi has admitted the “pain is immense” following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, saying the disappointment will take time to heal.

Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy ended on Sunday after Ferran Torres scored the only goal in extra time to hand Spain a 1-0 victory and their second men’s World Cup title.

The defeat marked Messi’s second loss in a World Cup final after Argentina were beaten by Germany in 2014. At 39, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has yet to confirm whether he will continue his international career.

“The matches we turned around by giving it our all – moments that will remain in our memories forever – and the support of an entire country which, combined with this group’s hard work and effort, brought us back among the world’s elite once again.”

He added: “It is hard to fully appreciate our achievement right now, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals.”

Messi also thanked supporters for their backing throughout the tournament.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and message. Once again, we managed to unite as a country and stand together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine.”

“I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.”

    Fernandez backs teammates amid investigation

Messi finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists, helping Argentina reach a third World Cup final in four editions.

Meanwhile, midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was sent off late in the final after receiving a second yellow card, praised his teammates for their commitment.

“For years, this group has represented us in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up,” Fernandez wrote.

Argentina are also awaiting the outcome of a FIFA disciplinary investigation into altercations involving players and coaching staff after the final whistle in New Jersey.
