A new partnership aimed at building a slate of action films from West Africa has been unveiled, bringing together Moses Babatope’s Nile Media Entertainment Group, Idris Elba’s 22Summers, and Chee Keong Cheung’s Action Xtreme.

The deal, first reported by Deadline, will focus on developing and producing a slate of commercially driven action films rooted in African stories, with an emphasis on building a long-term production and talent development ecosystem.

The first title under the collaboration is expected to be announced in the coming months, with a release targeted for Q4 2026, followed by a second project slated for Q1 2027. Elba is attached to direct one of the films and will serve as executive producer alongside Gina Carter, while ‘Son of the Soil’ director Cheung will direct the first project. Babatope will produce under Nile Motion Pictures, with African distribution handled by Nile Entertainment.

Beyond the announcement itself, the partnership reflects a more deliberate push into genre filmmaking from West Africa, particularly action, a category that has historically been underdeveloped in Nollywood despite its global commercial viability.

It also extends Nile’s growing footprint across the film value chain. In recent months, the company has strengthened its distribution position through its appointment as West Africa’s distributor for major Hollywood studios, including Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures, via its partnership with United International Pictures, while also expanding its exhibition network through new cinema management deals, including its involvement with Viva Cinemas. Those moves collectively position Nile to exert greater control over how films are produced, released, and monetised across the region.

That broader strategy has been central to Babatope’s recent positioning of the company, with a focus on building commercially scalable infrastructure across production, distribution, and exhibition. The new action slate effectively adds a genre-focused production layer to that model, targeting one of the most globally exportable categories of filmmaking.

“This is not simply about making films,” Babatope said. “It is about creating a sustainable ecosystem that combines production, talent development, and distribution to give African filmmakers the opportunity to create world-class action content that can travel across borders while remaining authentically African.”

The move comes as Nollywood continues to see renewed commercial momentum, driven by improving box office performance and a gradual expansion of cinema infrastructure. However, much of that growth has been anchored in drama and comedy, leaving action and other high-concept genres relatively underexplored.

Industry observers have long pointed to action as one of the most exportable film categories, given its ability to transcend language and cultural barriers. The involvement of globally recognised talent like Elba combined with Nile’s integrated position across the value chain suggests a more structured attempt to bridge that gap.

Elba framed the collaboration as part of a longer-term effort to strengthen the African film industry through partnerships.

“The journey continues,” he said. “Strengthening the African film industry is about collaboration and shared perspectives. I am fortunate to have these partners and aim to have global success with this slate. Success breeds data, and data breeds investment.”

For Action Xtreme, the partnership also builds on its existing relationship with Nile, signalling a continuation rather than a starting point. Together, the companies say they aim to develop commercially ambitious films that can compete globally while remaining rooted in African storytelling.
