Barcelona have intensified their pursuit of Atlético Madrid striker Julian Álvarez after sporting director Deco held a fresh round of talks with the Argentine’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in Madrid.

According to Spanish reports, the meeting was aimed at keeping Barcelona’s hopes of signing Álvarez alive despite Atlético Madrid’s continued refusal to negotiate for one of their key players.

    Barcelona maintain contact through agent

With relations between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid reportedly at a low point, direct negotiations between the clubs have stalled.

Reports claim Atlético president Miguel Ángel Gil Marín remains unwilling to discuss a transfer, prompting Barcelona to continue working through Álvarez’s representatives instead.

The latest meeting is not believed to represent a breakthrough, but rather an effort to ensure Barcelona are well-positioned to act quickly if Atlético soften their stance in the coming weeks.

Barcelona are understood to view the Argentina international as their top attacking target this summer and are determined to keep the deal alive despite the difficult circumstances.

Alvarez remains committed to professional approach

The Catalan club remain convinced Alvarez is interested in making the switch to Camp Nou, although the World Cup winner is not expected to force an exit.

Reports suggest the striker believes a previous promise regarding a future transfer was not honoured, but he has no intention of publicly confronting Atlético Madrid or manager Diego Simeone.

Barcelona’s opening €100 million bid was reportedly rejected, although the club could improve its offer if Atlético become willing to enter formal negotiations.

Head coach Hansi Flick has also made no secret of his desire to strengthen his attacking options, with Álvarez remaining his preferred target.

Despite Barcelona’s continued efforts behind the scenes, club officials reportedly accept that completing the transfer remains one of the toughest challenges of the summer.

With Atlético standing firm and communication between the clubs still strained, any progress will likely depend on a significant shift in the Spanish side’s position before the transfer deadline.
