The Dallas Wings’ franchise-record winning streak ended Monday night, but not before the team showed just how far it has come.

Less than 30 hours after beating the Los Angeles Sparks 90-82 to clinch the longest winning streak in franchise history, Dallas put the New York Liberty in overtime before losing 99-98 at the sold-out College Park Center.

Sunday’s win over LA extended the Wings’ winning streak to six games and improved Dallas to 17-8, tying the franchise’s best 25-game start since relocating to North Texas before the 2016 season.

Before Sunday’s game, Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts knew Dallas would present a challenge.

“It’s not a simple answer,” Roberts said. “They’ve got the pieces you need to be dangerous offensively in terms of a tremendous playmaking guard with Paige, who also can go and create her own shot when she needs to. You’ve got an incredible shooter in Azzi. Jessica Shepard has just been really, really good. Phenomenally good this year.

“There’s a whole game plan. I’m not going to get into it, but we know how good they are and how dangerous they are.”

Bueckers scored 25 points, four rebounds and five assists in Sunday’s victory before exiting late after suffering a hard fall. She entered Monday night leading the WNBA in fourth-quarter scoring (147 points).

Head coach Jose Fernandez said after the game that he had no update on Bueckers.

“I don’t have an update,” Fernandez said. “I know she was being evaluated. We’ll know more once she’s seen our doctors.”

Ogunbowale finished Dallas’ offense by scoring the Wings’ final four points to seal the victory on Sunday.

“We obviously needed a bucket to kind of seal the game,” Ogunbowale said. “When I came in, I just wanted to maintain the lead, not turn it over and put everybody in the right spots to get a good shot. It just happened that I was able to get downhill. We just wanted to continue pushing the pace and staying locked in defensively at the end of games.”

Jessica Shepard added 11 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, while Azzi Fudd and Awak Kuier scored 11 each.

The victory also marked Dallas’ eighth win in its last 10 games and secured the franchise’s longest winning streak since relocating to North Texas.

With Monday’s game originally postponed from Thursday due to travel delays involving New York’s charter flight, Dallas found itself playing the second half of an unusual back-to-back without Bueckers.

Ogunbowale responded with 29 points, six assists and five rebounds. Shepard recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds, while Fudd added 15 points, Maddy Siegrist scored 13 and Kuier finished with 10.

Dallas led by as many as 11 points in regulation before New York caught up to force overtime. Ogunbowale tied the game late in regulation before knocking down a 3-pointer that gave Dallas a 93-90 lead with 2:39 remaining in overtime. Sabrina Ionescu responded by scoring 12 of her 21 points in the extra period. Dallas forced a shot-clock violation to earn one final possession, but Ogunbowale’s runner at the buzzer did not reach the rim.

The loss ended the Wings’ six-game winning streak and dropped Dallas to 17-9, though the Wings still took the regular-season series against New York 2-1 for the first time since 2022.

Despite the defeat, Dallas finished the two-game homestand by showing it could compete with one of the WNBA’s top teams even without Bueckers, who was ruled out before tipoff after suffering the injury Sunday against Los Angeles.

Fernandez was proud of how his team battled without Bueckers.

“The biggest thing we talked about was that every possession matters,” Fernandez said. “We were down three at halftime, but they had a 16-2 advantage in second-chance points. That’s a big number. The glass was very important. We could’ve done a much better job there.

“With a lot of things that happened today, I liked how our team responded. For the most part they kept their composure through some really tough situations on both ends of the floor and got the game to overtime.”

Fernandez credited the effort to the team’s character.

“Paige is a very, very important part of our team. She’s one of the best players in the entire world,” Fernandez said. “For us to play without her and have it come down to a possession here or a possession there shows the type of character we have in our locker room.”

Ogunbowale thinks the team will benefit from the experience later on this season.

“It had a playoff atmosphere and a playoff-type feel,” she said. “This film will help us a lot with execution, time management and everything that comes with those situations.”

Dallas now shifts its focus to Wednesday night’s road matchup against the Portland Fire, its final game before the WNBA All-Star break. Tipoff from Moda Center is scheduled for 9 p.m. CT on USA Network and KFAA.
