With an 80-year history in crafting bourbon whiskey, Kentucky-based Wild Turkey has built up an archive that spans different flavors, intensities and aromas. Boasting a varied library of fine blends, the brand’s vintage cult classics will now be reimagined in a limited-edition series called the Austin Nichols Archives Collection. The collectible range, which will be annually released over the coming years, commemorates the legacy of Wild Turkey’s Master Distiller, Jimmy Russell. Conceptualized by his grandson and Associate Master Blender Bruce Russell, it aims to reimagine popular releases by drawing inspiration from their distinct profiles, paying more of an homage to the flavors rather than creating an exact reproduction. The first installment in the collection, Gold Foil Edition, is based on Wild Turkey’s most well-known releases from the ‘80s and ‘90s, affectionately known to fans as the “Cheesy Gold Foil”. The bottles were originally released between 1985 and 1992, but in the years following the Bourbon Boom of the 2010s, they found a new cult-like status among whiskey collectors where “dusties” became highly sought after for their complex flavor profiles. To capture the essence of the “Cheesy Gold Foil” bottlings, Wild Turkey’s Gold Foil Edition is a 16-year-old, non-chill filtered, 120 proof Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. The result is a rich and intense bourbon undercut by a noticeable fruity taste and oak aroma. Explaining the profile of the Gold Foil Edition, Russell shares, “It's probably one of the best-tasting whiskeys we've ever done. It's got notes of the original Wild Turkey ‘funk’ is what we call it, which is this dark fruit and mature oak that has an almost rum-like quality that you don't find in modern whiskies very much, but you used to find in a lot of vintage whiskies, specifically [at Wild Turkey].” Stay tuned on Hypebeast to find out more about the aforementioned drop.
