Alejandro Garnacho’s Chelsea career appears to be ended as new manager Xabi Alonso suggested he would depart.

Alonso refused to guarantee that the former Manchester United forward would stay at the club, saying he has spoken with the Chelsea management to find a solution, with Serie A club Roma among those interested in the Argentine.

“The situation is we have spoken with the sports directors, and there’s an interest in him from other clubs,” Alonso stated. “So let’s see how it develops, but hopefully it finishes in the best possible way for all parties.”

Garnacho joined Chelsea last August for £40m from Manchester United, who reportedly have a sell-on clause of about 10 per cent.

But he endured a mediocre campaign, scoring one Premier League goal as the London club finished 10th. He was also left out of the Argentina squad for the World Cup.

The Garnacho situation is one of the most pressing issues for Alonso to resolve as he takes over at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea suffered a dire 2025-26 season and failed to qualify for Europe, which will put a strain on their finances.

“We are starting from zero,” said Alonso, who has been given a four-year contract at the club. He said Chelsea expected to return to European football this season.

“For sure, that’s a goal,” Alonso added. “But to achieve that aim, you must do many things well and be a part of the process: how we want to play, how we want to see ourselves, and how we want to approach a game wherever we go. That is my work.

“We definitely want to be there, and time will tell. But we are ambitious, and all we need is to demonstrate our enthusiasm, passion, and thirst for success.”
