The Wonders of Alice Brings Imagination to the Baltimore Runway

On Saturday, August 8, the Lord Baltimore Hotel will be transformed into a world of imagination, creativity, and fashion as SewFabulous Sewing School presents The Wonders of Alice Fashion Showcase from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, the showcase will invite guests to step “down the rabbit hole” into an afternoon filled with original garments, theatrical design, and artistic storytelling. The event will feature work created by children, teenagers, adults, emerging designers, and special guest designers, including design students from Morgan State University.

The showcase is designed to celebrate more than beautiful clothing. It will highlight the dedication, technical skill, and creative vision required to transform an idea into a finished garment. Each piece presented on the runway will reflect the designer’s individual interpretation of Wonderland, using color, texture, shape, and construction to bring imaginative concepts to life.

For many SewFabulous students, the event represents the culmination of months of study and practice. Students learn how to select fabrics, read and modify patterns, operate sewing machines, construct garments, solve design problems, and present their work professionally. These skills help young designers develop patience, discipline, confidence, and an appreciation for craftsmanship.

SewFabulous Sewing School provides sewing and fashion-design education for children, teens, and adults. Its programs are intended to make creative arts education accessible while introducing students to educational and career opportunities within the fashion industry. Participants are encouraged to see sewing not only as a hobby but also as a pathway to college design programs, entrepreneurship, costume design, tailoring, merchandising, and other creative professions.

The Wonders of Alice will also demonstrate the importance of intergenerational learning. Beginning students will share the runway with more experienced designers, allowing participants to learn from one another and see what is possible through continued education and practice. The inclusion of Morgan State University design students will further connect younger participants with emerging professionals who are developing their skills at the college level.

Guests can expect a full runway presentation featuring original collections inspired by the magic and mystery of Wonderland. The afternoon will also include entertainment, photo opportunities, and opportunities to meet designers and learn more about their creative processes. The Lord Baltimore Hotel will provide an elegant backdrop for the event and reinforce the showcase’s combination of fantasy, fashion, and community celebration.

Baltimore has a long tradition of artistic innovation, and events like this help ensure that emerging creators have a visible place within that tradition. By presenting student work in a formal venue, SewFabulous gives participants the experience of being recognized not simply as learners but as designers whose ideas and labor have value.

The event is intended for a broad audience. Fashion enthusiasts will have the opportunity to discover new talent, while families and community members can support students as they present their work publicly. Educators, artists, entrepreneurs, and supporters of youth development may also find inspiration in seeing how hands-on arts instruction can help students identify their strengths and imagine future possibilities.

Creative education can have a lasting effect on students. Completing a garment requires planning, measurement, precision, persistence, and the ability to revise when something does not work as expected. Presenting that garment before an audience requires another kind of courage. Through experiences such as The Wonders of Alice, students learn that their ideas deserve to be developed.

The showcase also reflects SewFabulous Sewing School’s broader commitment to strengthening the Baltimore community through the arts. By creating a professional platform for student and emerging designers, the school helps participants build portfolios, gain runway experience, connect with mentors, and receive recognition for their work. The event also gives local audiences a chance to invest in the next generation of designers and creative entrepreneurs.

The Wonders of Alice Fashion Showcase will take place Saturday, August 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore. Ticket information, sponsorship opportunities, media inquiries, interview requests, and requests for media passes may be directed to Margaret Garland, founder and director of SewFabulous Sewing School, at 410-653-3212.

Through imaginative designs and the achievements of its students, The Wonders of Alice promises an inspiring afternoon where fashion becomes storytelling and creativity knows no limits.
