    The Newport Jazz Festival

NEWPORT, R.I. — Against the backdrop of Narragansett Bay, thousands of music lovers gathered once again for the 2026 Newport Jazz Festival, continuing a tradition that has made Newport one of the world's premier celebrations of jazz.

Since its founding and following the vision of George Wein, the festival has blended legendary performers with emerging artists, ensuring that jazz remains vibrant and relevant for new generations.

This year's lineup reflected that commitment. Established artists including Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, and John Scofield shared the spotlight with innovators such as Chief Adjuah, Butcher Brown, Thunder Cat, Robert Glasper, Mohini Dey, Leon Thomas, and Snarky Puppy, offering audiences a broad look at where jazz has been—and where it is headed.

Longtime festival attendee Kate Martland from Providence, RI summed up Newport's philosophy best.

"Their commitment to putting new artists in front of this audience is keeping that tradition alive."

The festival is also about the people who return year after year. I met Tony Lee of Framingham, Massachusetts, and Fortune Sithole, originally from Zimbabwe, who now make Newport an annual reunion with friends from around the country.

"We come and stay the full week exploring Newport and hearing music from legendary jazz artists as well as artists we've never heard before but now really love," Lee said.

This year's festival also marked a new chapter as acclaimed drummer, composer, and producer Nate Smith began his tenure as Artistic Director, following Christian McBride and continuing Newport's tradition of balancing its rich history with fresh artistic vision.

As a photographer covering the festival, some of the most memorable moments happen in-between the notes—musicians sharing quiet conversations before a performance, spontaneous standing ovations, and young aspiring artists watching their musical heroes from only a few feet away. Those moments often tell the story of Newport as much as the performances themselves.

Even a steady rain on the festival's final day could not dampen the spirit of the weekend. As the last notes drifted across the Newport Harbor, the festival once again demonstrated why it remains one of the world's great musical gatherings—honoring its remarkable jazz history while continually introducing audiences to the future of music.
