Sweetie Pie's grew from a small St. Louis soul food restaurant into a nationally known family business and hit reality TV show. Then Tim Norman, son of founder Robbie Montgomery, was convicted in a murder-for-hire case involving his nephew, Andre Montgomery Jr., and sentenced to life in prison. This documentary tells the extraordinary story of Robbie Montgomery, Sweetie Pie's, and the rise and fall of one of America's best-known Black-owned soul food businesses. Before becoming a restaurateur, Robbie Montgomery was a professional singer and one of the original Ikettes, performing with Ike and Tina Turner and working around some of the biggest names in American music. After health problems ended her singing career, she returned to St. Louis and began rebuilding her life around the Southern recipes she learned from her mother. In 1996, Montgomery opened the first Sweetie Pie's restaurant in Dellwood, Missouri. The business expanded across St. Louis, eventually including The Upper Crust, a flagship restaurant and event space built at a reported cost of approximately $4 million. Sweetie Pie's became nationally famous after *Welcome to Sweetie Pie's* premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network in 2011. The reality series followed Robbie Montgomery, Tim Norman, and their family as they operated the restaurants, and it ran for nine seasons and 99 episodes. But behind the success, the Montgomery family was heading toward a devastating tragedy. In 2016, Robbie's grandson Andre Montgomery Jr. was shot and killed in St. Louis. Years later, prosecutors accused Tim Norman of arranging his nephew's murder as part of a scheme involving life insurance. In 2022, a federal jury convicted Norman of charges connected to the murder-for-hire plot and insurance fraud. In 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison. As the criminal case unfolded, Sweetie Pie's restaurants continued disappearing. The $4 million Upper Crust location closed in 2022, and the remaining Sweetie Pie's locations eventually closed as well. Yet Robbie Montgomery's story may not be over. In her eighties, she began pursuing plans for a new St. Louis restaurant called Sweetie Pie's 2nd Act, attempting to rebuild the business after losing her grandson, seeing her son sentenced to life in prison, and watching the restaurant empire she created disappear.
