Last month, DTE Energy welcomed its annual cohort of summer student interns, who were offered the option of participating in a new career mentorship program. DTE team members generously stepped up to volunteer their time to be mentors and provide their mentee one-on-one support across their summer internship.

“My approach is all about life lessons,” said Will Morris, DTE Lineman. “I use the phrase, ‘If I knew then, what I know now, I would have…’ that hopefully provides some intangible lessons, career advice and act as a positive influence on others in this journey of life!”

During the seven-week program, students will have weekly one-on-one sessions with their mentors, opportunities to participate in networking events within the organization as well as tours of DTE facilities, such as its Monroe Power Plant.

“This new pilot program makes our students feel included in a large organization, directs their interests to consider careers in energy and support them in fine-tuning their skills,” said Scott Miller, manager, HR Talent Acquisition. “Whether students become DTE employees or join other Michigan companies, they’re set up to make a meaningful impact in the future.”

DTE hosts students year-round, which provides emerging professionals and those pursuing skilled trades exposure to energy industry careers and the opportunity to apply their learnings to real-world projects.

“The vision of our newly launched mentorship program is to build a strong pipeline of confident, capable professionals supported by engaged mentors and meaningful learning experiences,” said Anna Carter, manager, Capital Project Implementation, DTE Project Management Office. “This summer, our volunteer employee mentors are offering a structured, supportive experience that develops early career talent while strengthening Michigan’s future workforce.”
