Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 6 "Off-Hour" review and breakdown. In 1984, Kirk asks Montgomery Scott whether he has always multiplied his repair estimates by a factor of four, and Scotty tells him it is the only way to keep his reputation as a miracle worker. We have carried that joke for 42 years and nobody ever asked where it came from, because it never occurred to anybody that it came from anywhere. This week it came from somewhere, and the show buried the answer in the B plot. Everybody is calling Off Hour a gimmick. It is a bottle episode, which is the oldest and most honest form this franchise has, and the credits alone end that argument: Bill Wolkoff has been on this show since the pilot and also wrote Subspace Rhapsody, the musical. Dan Liu directed Memento Mori. The same crew everyone decided was the end of this show made the hour everyone is now calling the first real episode of the season. What is actually happening underneath is Montgomery Scott, angry at his own ship, learning to listen to it anyway, and turning into the man who tells a captain she will hold and means it. Meanwhile sickbay quietly opens a door that runs all the way back to the 1964 pilot, and the prequel stakes question everybody is arguing about gets answered by the one character on that hull who is not protected.
