This summer, Chicago families will have the opportunity to participate in a
unique educational experience that combines movement, music, and play to help young children develop foundational math skills.

Theresa “Mother Dove” Smith-Hickman, an award-winning children’s author, educator, and founder of Mother Doves Academy, is launching a free six-week Math & Movement Program for children ages 2–5 and their families at Sumac Park on Chicago’s South Side.

The program will be held Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on June 17, June 24, July 1, July 15, July 22, and July 29. Families are encouraged to actively participate alongside their children as they explore early math concepts through interactive games, movement activities,
    music, and hands-on learning experiences.

“Our goal is to help children discover that math is all around them and that learning can be joyful,” said Smith-Hickman. “When children are moving, playing, exploring, and learning with the adults who love them, they build confidence and positive associations with learning that can
    last a lifetime.”

The program was designed in response to a growing need for accessible early childhood enrichment opportunities within the community. Research consistently shows that strong early math skills are among the best predictors of future academic success. Through activities
focused on counting, shapes, patterns, measurement, sorting, and problem-solving, children will develop critical foundational skills while having fun outdoors.

Smith-Hickman brings more than a decade of experience in early childhood education and currently serves as a special education teacher in Chicago. She is also the founder of Mother Doves Academy, an educational organization committed to helping children become confident
    and competent learners.

In addition to her work in education, Smith-Hickman is an award-winning author whose books promote literacy, perseverance, self-confidence, and cultural pride. Her titles include I Can… Just Try, I Can… Just Try, Too, I Am… A to Z, and The ABCs of Black History. In 2026, The
ABCs of Black History received the Book of the Year Award at the Black Child Book Fair.

Through her work as an educator, author, and community advocate, Smith-Hickman has conducted more than 75 author visits throughout schools, libraries, churches, and community organizations, inspiring children to embrace reading and recognize their potential.

The Math & Movement Program is one of several initiatives designed to support children and families through Mother Doves Academy and reflects Smith-Hickman’s commitment to ensuring that all children — regardless of background — have access to engaging, high-quality learning
    opportunities.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and discover their gifts,” Smith-Hickmansaid. “When communities invest in children, everyone benefits.”

Community members and media representatives are invited to attend any session of the Math &
    Movement Program.
