The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia announced the sentence on April 22, 2026, saying Dupiton had pleaded guilty earlier in the year. . According to federal prosecutors, the scheme began in 2020 while Dupiton was finishing an earlier federal sentence at a halfway house for a previous fraud conviction. Authorities say he and others used the stolen identities of hundreds of people to submit fraudulent unemployment insurance applications to California’s Employment Development Department. Investigators said the operation used a VPN to hide the source of the applications and later redirected benefit debit cards to addresses in Georgia, where cash withdrawals were made. . The DOJ says California was tricked into sending about $3.8 million in unemployment benefits, and that more than $2 million was later withdrawn or spent by Dupiton and his conspirators. Those numbers are important because they differ from some viral social media claims that described the case as a $10 million scam. Based on the official release, the verified loss tied to this sentencing is lower than the figure widely circulated online. . On April 14, 2026, U.S. District Judge Victoria M. Calvert sentenced Dupiton, 36, to seven years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Prosecutors said he pleaded guilty on January 13, 2026 to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, with restitution still to be determined at a future hearing. The case stands as another example of how pandemic relief programs became targets for organized fraud, and how social media headlines can sometimes exaggerate details even when the core story is true.
