Graffiti helmets, custom jerseys, and the coldest softball game on Earth. That’s how we’d describe this past Saturday afternoon at the second annual ICE Studios Series. The woman’s softball tournament in East Harlem was created by Bronx-born photographer, director, and creator of ICE Magazine (AKA, as she would call it, “coldest magazine on earth”) Renell Medrano in collaboration with Adidas.

While New York is still on a high from the Knicks’ championship win and the World Cup, “I grew up playing softball, and some of my favorite memories came from being part of a team,” said Renell Medrano in a press release. “As I got older, I realized how much I missed that sense of community, so I started ICE Studios City Series to bring women together through sport.” Hosted just miles from where she was raised, Black and Brown women from all five boroughs arrived on a big yellow school bus to the Dream Charter School field to play out the memory of Medrano’s childhood.

Adidas-dripped fans chugged fruit punch icees, bit wagyu chopped cheeses, and watched two teams (which represented both sides of her identity)—team New York and team Dominican Republic—bat it out for a championship ring. Customized exclusively for the game, team New York sported blue adidas Originals jerseys with the Ice Studios signature logo inscribed on the front while D.R. was in black with their respective flags pinned on their shoulders.

Their uniforms were complete with Ice Studios bandanas, Adidas socks, wristbands, and bats, and of course, cleats with all the traction to withstand the 3-hour game.  It was the most fashionable display of softball we’ve seen all year (brought to you by Medrano’s ICE Girls).

Hosted by casting director Jorge Gitoo Wright and Luar founder Raul Lopez, the game was friendly, yet competitive. Between foul balls, hard-hitting plays, and a few controversial calls, both teams were neck-and-neck up until the last inning. The fans were on the edge of their seats, but in the end, team New York took the trophy home. “It’s about unity, making new connections and creating memories together,” Medrano said. “My hope is that it continues to grow into a community where women show up for each other year after year.”

While she took the L on team D.R., the day still ended in a win for ICE Studios. For her, “seeing everyone fully present and enjoying the day together is what it’s all about.”
