Congratulations! Giving birth is one of life’s biggest and most sacred miracles. A newborn baby brings an infinite amount of joy, gratitude and pure marvel. That new life can also cause sadness, anxiety and fear. How do new and expecting mothers authentically hold space for both ends of the spectrum so many face?

For Black women, pregnancy and childbirth already pose extreme potential health risks. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Black women in the U.S. are nearly three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. The maternal mortality rate for Black women is approximately 50.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to 14.5 for White non-Hispanic women. Most of these tragic outcomes are highly preventable. Factor in postpartum anxiety and depression, and what should be one of the happiest seasons in a women’s life can become a less than pleasant experience.

In honor of Black Maternal Mental Health Week (July 19- July 25), we have gathered 8 resources to help our community’s new mamas and moms-to-be feel seen, heard and genuinely supported.

Insider Tip: If someone you love recently had a baby and you’re wondering how to help them out, consider preparing them a fuss-free meal (or a couple), knocking out a few loads of their laundry or caring for their newborn while they take a long, relaxing shower, run an errand or simply take a nap. These seemingly small gestures can make a huge positive impact on a new mom. Next, forward her and/or her partner this list so she can reference it to remember that she isn’t alone.
