Outdoor Festival Season is about to End

Hello, my dear friends, it has been a heck-of-a season this year. So many festivals have taken place, not just in Baltimore, but all of Maryland. Now the time has come when outdoor festivals are almost over. We have a few weeks left for festival-goers. I will tell you about them.

SubScape, was launched in 2024 as part of a long tradition of festivals taking place the same weekend as Artscape and represents the more experimental and underground side of the Baltimore music scene. Now that Artscape has moved to earlier in the year, SubScape remains in the late summer. This year’s festival is relocating from Station North to downtown Baltimore, with Philadelphia hardcore band Soul Glo headlining a bill that includes great local acts like Combat, Dosser, Super City and the recently reunited Krack. It is August 28-30 at Le Mondo 406 N. Howard Street in Baltimore.

Rambling Rose and goddaughter Dee Brent Addison will host a book signing in New York City on Saturday, August 29. Signature Live will be performing at the book signing festival, or you can see the show at the Avenue Bakery on Saturday, September 5, from 4-7 p.m., free. The Avenue Bakery is located at 2229 Pennsylvania Avenue in the Courtyard. Bring your folding chairs. This will be my last show for the season at the Avenue Bakery. For more information, call 410-833-9474.

Another festival you should check out is the Music City Maryland Festival, opens Saturday, August 29 from noon to 10 p.m. at the Vortex at CAA Park, 202 Ingleside Avenue in Catonsville. The Rev. Horton Heat, Texas Kings of the punk-rockabilly fusion known as “Psychobilly,” will headline the seventh annual Music City Maryland Festival. The Dive Bombs, Ghost Town Radio and Mallow Hill are a few of the other bands that will perform on two stages on the beautiful 12-acre Catonsville festival grounds.

Then there is Maryland’s largest celebration of agriculture, which unfolds over three weekends at the end of summer. The Maryland State Fair will run from August 27-30, September 3- 7, and the final week, September 10-13. The musical headliners have always been outstanding. The Maryland State Fair features rides, food vendors and livestock exhibits and competitions. The Fair opens 5 p.m. on Thursday; 9 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day Monday. It is located at 2200 York Road in Timonium.

Julian E. Jones Jr. is having his 14th Annual Community Picnic on Saturday, August 29 from noon to 7 p.m. at Northwest Region Park, 4515 Dear Park Road in Owings Mills.

The Downtown Largo Festival is pretty popular and will be held on  Saturday, September 5. Environmental stewardship and cultural inclusivity are part of the mission at the Downtown Largo Festival, which features a farmers’ market, gardening, demonstrations and local vendors. The time is 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and it is open September 10th through the 13th. It is open to the public and is free. It is located at 955 Shoppers Way, Largo, Maryland.

The Baltimore Book Festival will take place September 12th and 13th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 418 E. 32nd Street in Baltimore. It is free and open to the public. I'll share more about the September Festival in my next column.

Crosswinds will be performing at “The Sexy Sundress & Shorts Day Party” given by “All That Jazz Productions,” on Sunday August 23 from 3-7 p.m. It is BYOB & BYOF with free setups, at the Diamondz Events, 9980 Liberty Road in Randallstown, Maryland Shopping Center. For more information call Wanda Coe-Stewart at 443-562-2859.

On a sad note, I just received a call from Sandy Crawford and Charles Coverington that one of our dear old friends and yours (if you are in the jazz music scene), Ruth Binsky, passed away on Saturday, August 15. She was known for her strong support for local and internationally known musicians, especially with the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival. She will be missed. May her soul rest in peace. Condolences to her family from “Rambling Rose” and her husband, “Shorty”.

Well, my dear friends, I am just out of space; I have to go. But remember if you need me, call me at 410-833-9474 or email me at rosapryor@aol.comUNTIL THE NEXT TIME, I’M MUSICALLY YOURS.
