London-based tech brand Nothing has officially unveiled Nothing OS 5.0, a major software evolution built on Android 17 that introduces over 80 updates spanning design, performance, and customization.Grounded in a refined visual aesthetic, the update debuts a refreshed home screen, an adaptive color system drawn from user wallpapers, transparent widget accents and system-wide typography powered by the Geist typeface. Functional UI changes include split swipe gestures - opening Notifications from the left and Quick Settings from the right - alongside new lock screen clocks like "Gooey" and "Micrographics," and a cross-platform Quick Share feature that enables seamless file transfers to both iPhone and Android devices via a simple QR code.Nothing OS 5.0 also leverages on-device intelligence and overnight memory maintenance to optimize background app retention, touch responsiveness and system resource management. The release introduces new home screen widgets such as "Collector" for displaying curated personal items and "Away Time" for tracking screen-free duration, alongside a standalone dedicated app and timer widget for the signature Glyph Interface. On the AI front, the software enhances "Essential Voice" for cleaner real-time transcriptions, integrates Model Context Protocol (MCP) support within "Essential Space" and launches "Essential Apps Builder," allowing users to describe, build, and deploy custom AI-powered apps directly on their phone. The Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta officially begins rolling out today, launching first on Phone (3) before expanding to additional eligible devices.
