The Dallas Mavericks have officially named their next head coach and it is certainly one of the bigger stuns of the NBA offseason.

Michigan head coach Dusty May is finalizing a deal to become Dallas’ next head coach, multiple reports announced Monday. May will take over for Jason Kidd and start a new chapter in Dallas for president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri.

May brings national championship experience to Dallas after leading Michigan to the 2026 NCAA National Championship. He went 37-3 this past season with Michigan and gave the program its first championship since 1989. May went 64-13 in two seasons at Michigan, won a Big Ten Tournament title and a Big Ten regular-season title while establishing himself as one of the top coaches in the nation.

Before Michigan, May took Florida Atlantic from a mid-major program to national prominence behind consecutive 20-plus win seasons. In three seasons with FAU, May led the Owls to the 2023 Final Four and became the winningest coach in school history.

The position will be May’s first opportunity to coach in the NBA and highlights Dallas’ focus on player development and winning with young talent.

May will have the chance to right the ship in Dallas after the Mavericks failed to reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Although he is an NBA coaching neophyte, his résumé speaks for itself and established himself as a top culture builder and winning coach.

May is set to be named the Mavericks head coach just a day before the 2026 NBA Draft and is Ujiri’s first big coaching decision of his tenure with the Mavericks.
