Jose Mourinho has admitted discussions surrounding a possible return to Real Madrid are ongoing, but insisted no formal offer has been made as speculation over the club’s managerial future intensifies.

The 63-year-old revealed that his future could be resolved “this week” after leading Benfica through an unbeaten domestic league campaign that ended with a third-place finish in Portugal.

“My future should be decided this week,” Mourinho said.

“I have a proposal from Benfica. I don’t have a proposal from Real Madrid. At the same time, to hide that there is nothing, we cannot do that, there is something, but not with me directly.”

The former Real Madrid boss added that he wants time before making any commitment regarding the next stage of his managerial career.

“I need time, I need space, I need time to make my decision, and this week I think is going to be very important.”

Arbeloa praises Mourinho amid replacement speculation

Current Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa also addressed the growing rumours before his side’s La Liga clash with Sevilla.

Arbeloa, who played under Mourinho during the Portuguese coach’s previous spell in Madrid between 2010 and 2013, described him as one of the club’s greatest figures.

“For me, as one of his players, but above all as a Real Madrid fan, I feel he’s number one,” Arbeloa said.

“Jose has been, is and always will be one of us, and if he’s the one here next season, I’ll be very happy to see him back home.”

Mourinho could return to familiar territory

Mourinho previously guided Real Madrid to a La Liga title and a Copa del Rey during a successful three-year stint at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Across his managerial career, he has also taken charge of Chelsea, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, while winning the UEFA Champions League twice.

Despite being under contract with Benfica until 2027, Mourinho’s latest comments have further fuelled expectations that a dramatic return to Madrid could be on the cards.
