Why are men still expected to pay for dates—and why do some women believe a man who can’t afford to pay shouldn’t be dating at all? In this 12-minute throwback clip from 8 At The Table, Rico Hundo, Romeo and guests get into a heated conversation about money, dating, 50/50 relationships, provider expectations and one of the biggest double standards in modern dating: if men and women are supposed to be equal partners, why is the financial responsibility of dating still so often placed on the man? The conversation starts with a controversial statement: “If you’re broke, you shouldn’t be dating.” One woman argues that if a man can’t afford to feed himself or financially provide for himself, he’s simply not in a position to pursue a serious relationship. She says she’d happily buy him food as a friend—but that doesn’t mean she’d date him. The men push back. If it’s completely normal for a man to buy a woman dinner, plan dates and spend money pursuing her, why do some women resist spending money on men? If both people are eating, why is one person’s wallet automatically responsible for the bill? And if a woman says, “When are you taking me on a date?” is she actually asking him out—or simply telling him to organize and pay for another date? The table debates who should pay on dates, whether the person who initiates should pay, broke men dating, traditional gender roles, provider men, financial expectations, equality, 50/50 relationships and whether modern dating expects men to maintain traditional responsibilities while relationships become increasingly equal everywhere else. But there’s another side: does equality necessarily mean men and women have to contribute in exactly the same ways? Some women genuinely want a traditional provider relationship and don’t claim to want 50/50. Is that a double standard—or simply a relationship preference that both people are free to accept or reject? Watch the full conversation and decide for yourself. If men and women are equal partners, should women be expected to pay for dates too? Should whoever asks for the date pay? And if a man is temporarily broke, does that mean he has no business dating until his finances improve?
