Real Madrid and France national football team are facing an anxious wait after Kylian Mbappe was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury during the 1-1 draw against Real Betis.

The forward, making his 100th appearance for Madrid, signalled to be substituted in the 81st minute before heading straight down the tunnel at La Cartuja, raising immediate concerns over his fitness ahead of a critical run of fixtures.

    Injury concern overshadows result

Initial assessments point to a strain in Mbappe’s left hamstring, although the full extent of the damage remains unclear pending further medical evaluation.

The incident capped a frustrating night for Madrid, who conceded a stoppage-time equaliser through Hector Bellerin to drop two vital points in the title race.

Manager Alvaro Arbeloa admitted uncertainty over the situation post-match.

“I have no idea [what’s wrong with Mbappe]. He felt some discomfort. We’ll see how he evolves over the next few days,” Arbeloa said.

    Timing adds pressure

The injury compounds existing challenges for Madrid, who are eight points behind Barcelona and at risk of ending the season without silverware.

Mbappe’s absence would be a major blow given his central role in the team’s attacking output.

The club are already under pressure defensively, having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 10 matches, while inconsistent results continue to undermine their title push.

    International implications

Beyond club concerns, the development is significant for France ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mbappe remains the focal point of the national team’s ambitions, with their opening fixture scheduled against Senegal in June.

Any extended recovery period could disrupt his preparation, placing additional scrutiny on Madrid’s medical team as they manage his rehabilitation timeline.

Crucial fixtures ahead for Real Madrid

Madrid face RCD Espanyol next before a decisive El Clasico clash against Barcelona. Without Mbappe, their attack may require immediate adjustment.
