It’s a Wednesday night in New York and the city smells like wildfire smoke. And yet, I’ve just arrived at The Amber Room, a dimly lit nightclub in midtown. Ironically, the fire outside was a natural hint to something I’d be smelling inside the club that night.

As soon as the door cracked open, Megan Thee Stallion’s first-ever fragrance, housed in a sculptural flame-shaped bottle, filled the room. To my right, each note—coconut milk, orchid, and vetiver—was distilled into individual bottles. I smelled them all separately, then was presented with the whole accord: Hot Girl Summer Eau de Parfum.

“I’ve loved perfumes ever since I was a kid,” Megan Thee Stallion tells ESSENCE exclusively. “As I got older, people would always compliment the way I smelled, so it really inspired me to tap into that passion, create a fragrance of my own, turn it into a business and share it with the Hotties.”

According to her, the fragrance was an expansion of what she called her “Hot Girl Universe.” For one, the bar was stocked with her tequila, Chicas Divertidas, with drinks that embodied the fragrance (if it had a taste). On the other side of the room, cotton candy was spun with a “Hot Girl Summer” stencil stuck on, servers walked around with trays of temporary tattoos, and she even had tarot card readings from a fortune teller.

“I’m all about first impressions,” Thee Stallion says with an aeralist flipping on corde lisse infront of the DJ booth. “I definitely wanted to create a fragrance that leaves a strong first impression the moment you walk into a room.” Creating a world around her fragrance, she says the scent is just as “warm and inviting” as the party was.

Since it’s limited-edition, it’s an end-of-summer fragrance that quickly evolves from a rich orchid aroma into a subtle, smoky base. While I’m usually partial to niche, clean, and laundered fragrances, like Lore’s Sublimity Eau de Parfum and Byredo’s Blanche Eau de Parfum, I expected this fragrance to be too strong and floral for my liking. To my surprise, the fragrance exudes floral notes, but one that’s smooth and milky. On my skin, floral top notes quickly evolved into an addictively powdery base, which I found myself smelling over and over again.

From work to dates and late nights out, the orchid vetiver fragrance is all about smelling hot, instead of just looking it. Luckily for Thee Stallion, she’s mastered both. “The launch event for my fragrance was so much fun and it meant the world to celebrate with the Hotties in New York City,” she says, which included Jordan Chiles and Meredith Marks on the guest list. “It was just great vibes all around.”
