A resident in Lagos has shared a troubling encounter with her neighbour’s 19-year-old daughter, raising questions about hygiene awareness and the delicate nature of personal advice.

    A neighbourly intervention

The woman recounted that the teenager, who had visited her home on several occasions, often left behind a strong and unpleasant body odour.

Concerned about the young girl’s wellbeing and the possibility of social embarrassment, she decided to intervene.

I started worrying that people might mock her in the future if nothing was done about it. So I gently asked her if she had ever heard of roll-on or antiperspirant,” the neighbour said.

She told me she hadn’t, which surprised me because she appears quite modern and well put together.”

    An unexpected reaction

In an attempt to help, the woman offered the teenager an antiperspirant and explained its daily use, noting that underarm hygiene is a common cause of body odour.

However, the conversation did not go as intended, as the teenager appeared visibly hurt and left shortly afterwards.

I tried to be honest and told her she didn’t smell very nice. She looked offended, and since then, she has avoided me completely,” she added.

By the following morning, the once-friendly teenager reportedly ignored the neighbour, refusing to exchange greetings.

Similar incidents have previously sparked debate on social media, where discussions around personal hygiene and sensitivity often trend, highlighting the fine line between concern and perceived criticism.
