So much about parenthood requires sacrifice. Like having an entire room in your home that you could do just about anything with, but making the gracious decision to let it be a playroom for your kiddos. LeToya Luckett did just that when she built her home in Texas with her then-3-year-old daughter, Gianna, and then-2-year-old son, Tysun, in mind. We spoke to the star back in 2022 about building her home post-divorce and wanting to create a space that brings her and her kiddos joy. “Your environment matters,” she said at the time.

But four years later, it’s time for Mama to put her needs first. In the years that have since passed, toys and playtime have moved to Gianna and Tysun’s individual rooms, and, as things go, the playroom has become a catch-all. So it’s the perfect time to work some magic. And by magic, I mean turning that playroom into a walk-in closet for Luckett.

To help make that happen, Luckett enlisted California Closets Houston and professional organizer Lauryn Hill, co-founder of The Order Project.

“LeToya wanted to get dressed completely in this space and make it her own,” says Ashley Lithgoe, California Closets Houston sales manager. “She also had a large back-lit mirror she was hoping to incorporate into the design with a vanity. I worked closely with our team to bring her vision to life.  She got her vanity, and the overall space is functional yet highly personalized for her specific needs and style. This custom dressing room is a perfect example of what a thoughtful design and professional organization can do. You don’t have to incorporate bells and whistles everywhere (although we love those things, too) to achieve a beautiful closet you can enjoy every day.”

We spoke with Hill of The Order Project about the process of bringing Luckett’s dream walk-in closet to life, the inspiration for the design, and why a closet isn’t only for clothes and shoes, but with the right imagination, can be a gathering space for friends, family, and more.

ESSENCE: Gianna and Tysun are still littles! Did LeToya share why this was the right time to reimagine the playroom into a customized walk-in closet?

Lauryn Hill: The kids are indeed littles, but they now have their own play spaces in their respective rooms in the house. The playroom was turning into the “junk room” since they had outgrown it, so we decided to convert it to a custom closet. LeToya had outgrown the closet space we originally organized for her as well!

What was the inspiration behind her design?

The inspiration was really to have a space for her glam—the wardrobe and the beauty side as well. She did not have a dedicated glam space, and with the evolving way of styling, photoshoots, etc., she needed a space within her home to do all of those things.

Did she come with a lot of ideas, or was she open to whatever concepts your team brought to the table?

She definitely had input, but we guided her and the process with California Closets Houston to ensure her ideas could be functionally and beautifully incorporated.

There are two cozy seats with a small end table in between within the closet space, which one would assume allows for more than just picking out clothes, but gathering and chatting. What was behind that inclusion?

Correct. LeToya absolutely wanted it to be a space that was cozy for her to be in with friends, family, and/or her glam squad. It’s also her getaway space to just be at peace!

What are her favorite parts of the closet space?

Technically, the whole space!  But LeToya’s favorite parts are having more storage and having the vanity space to do glam!
