Grambling State is about to give college basketball fans a reason to stay up late—or get up extremely early.

The Tigers will face Northern Illinois at 3 a.m. ET on Nov. 2 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as part of The Field of 68’s Opening Day Marathon, a 24-hour celebration designed to showcase college basketball from the first tip to the final buzzer.

For Grambling State, the unusual matchup provides a chance to put its program in the national spotlight on one of the sport’s biggest opening-day stages.

The game is expected to be one of the more unconventional contests on the early-season schedule, with the 3 a.m. start guaranteeing that the Tigers and Northern Illinois will have a national audience watching during the overnight hours.

The Opening Day Marathon has developed a reputation for bringing together Division I programs while providing fans with virtually nonstop college basketball coverage. Grambling State’s participation gives the Tigers an opportunity to introduce themselves to a national audience before the season settles into the traditional rhythm of nonconference and conference play.

Beyond the novelty of the start time, the matchup could also serve as an important early-season test for both teams.

With conference play still weeks away, Grambling State and Northern Illinois will get an opportunity to evaluate their teams against Division I competition and begin establishing the identity they hope to carry throughout the season.

Of course, the biggest storyline will likely remain the clock.

At 3:00 a.m. ET on Nov. 2, most college basketball fans will either be asleep or just beginning their day. But for those looking for an early-morning basketball fix, Grambling State and Northern Illinois will be ready to provide it.

And if nothing else, the Tigers’ season opener is sure to be one that fans won’t forget.
