    Growing as a ‘Heartbeat’

The Baltimore Times interviewed a group of wonderful people to provide insight into Ms. Joni Holifield. Joni was more than a mentor; she was a leader, a mother figure, and an advocate, a source of hope for many young people with dreams growing up in Baltimore. Her aspirations, grit, and powerful life lessons continue to shape "heartbeats." She believed every young person had the potential to soar and succeed, no matter the obstacles they faced or where they were from. By establishing HeartSmiles, she gave a sense of security and opportunity for youth to discover their strengths, become leaders, and build their confidence. But she didn’t just do it with her actions; she did it with her words as well.

“Imagine a Baltimore where every young person felt confident in themselves as a leader and as a personal responsibility to help Baltimore be better.  We are not far from reality. Please don’t misunderstand, y’all — this isn’t about my legacy. This is about longevity for promise, not a program that is actively building Baltimore’s best and brightest young leaders.”

But most importantly, Ms. Joni cared about the youth. She committed herself to her youth; she also made them feel loved, as well as giving them a safe haven. Even when walking into HeartSmiles you can feel the community she built and the love she had for it, with also the feeling of somberness from her absence.

The Baltimore Times internship students spoke with Kamari Moses, age 22, and asked Ms. Moses how Joni impacted her; she explained that Joni was a mother figure to her. Joni even came to her graduation and supported her every step of the way. She stated that she would always say, “Stay ready so you don't have to get ready.” And that's something that has stuck with Kamari forever. But not only did she go to Kamari's graduation; she also helped Kamari when she was attending Spelman College. She wanted HeartSmiles to come to Atlanta because she was working at a nonprofit. She stated that Joni said, “Make a budget, make a plan, and I’ll fund it.” Ms. Joni was there when they needed her the most. Kamari also stated that, “She always put a battery pack in my ideas.” Joni was there for her even at her most vulnerable moments. Kamari said that after she lost someone very close to her, Joni just talked to her, and she felt like she had a few minutes of praise.

Miss Joni Hollifield may no longer be with us, but her influence continues to live through HeartSmiles. The community she served will continue to build on every heartfelt story that was shared by those who loved her and knew her. Joni's vision and spirit will always be in the hearts of everyone who participates in HeartSmiles.

A reminder to younger generations: One person can truly make a difference no matter their circumstances
