LAS VEGAS — When you dominate both ends of the floor with the consistency of A’ja Wilson, comparisons to all-time basketball greatness come naturally. Being likened to iconic figures like Michael Jordan or LeBron James has become standard dialogue surrounding the Las Vegas Aces superstar.

That praise is rooted in an unprecedented resume. Wilson has established herself as one of the most decorated players in basketball history, capturing multiple WNBA championships, several MVP awards, Defensive Player of the Year honors, WNBA Finals MVP trophies and Olympic gold medals. Yet, when dissecting what actually keeps her steps ahead of an evolving league, Wilson’s focus is not on highlight-reel offense. Instead, her attention remains grounded in the fundamental grit of defense.

“I would say my footwork,” Wilson said when asked about the specific element of her game she constantly refines to force the rest of the league into catch-up mode. “I think the biggest thing when it comes to defense is just moving your feet… and it’s hard work.”

For Wilson, elite defense is not just about length or athletic recovery; it is a game of physical leverage and rhythm disruption.

“We all love contact,” Wilson explained. “In a way, you need it to kind of perform well, you need it to move. And so if you can’t get that contact, it kind of throws you off your rhythm a little bit. So for me, my thing is just making sure that I can be kind of always, constantly moving so you really can’t feel me. And that comes from footwork.”

The Spurs Blueprint and Tactical Precision

Hammon’s own career credentials carry immense weight. When pressed on whether Wilson’s defensive presence leans closer to the rim-protecting anchor of Duncan or the perimeter-smothering versatility of Leonard, Hammon offered a detailed breakdown.

“She’s a hybrid,” Hammon said. “I don’t think Timmy wants to get out there and guard Kyrie Irving or whatever, and we’re running some different systems. I think A’ja’s strength defensively, and obviously offensively, but defensively especially, is her versatility. Her ability to guard truly 1 through 5.”

“Something that is very Timmy-esque is just her ability to quarterback the defense from a defensive standpoint,” Hammon noted. “From the post players, being able to talk, shift out and kind of conduct traffic from back there. That’s really, really helpful when you get that from your big. Tim was an excellent communicator on the defensive end.”
