FIFA has officially extended the suspension of Gianluca Prestianni to have global effect, significantly impacting his availability for upcoming international fixtures.

The decision means the SL Benfica winger could miss key matches if selected for Argentina’s squad at the FIFA World Cup.

Ban now applies across all competitions

The six-match suspension was initially handed down by UEFA following allegations of discriminatory conduct during a Champions League clash involving Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior.

FIFA’s intervention, triggered under Article 70 of its disciplinary code, ensures the sanction is enforced globally, not just within UEFA competitions.

    World Cup participation at risk

The ruling creates immediate uncertainty around Prestianni’s role with Argentina national football team.

If included in the squad, he would be unavailable for the opening two World Cup fixtures due to the carry-over of the ban into competitive international matches.

    Scope of suspension clarified

The suspension applies strictly to official competitions, UEFA matches and competitive internationals, while excluding friendlies and domestic league fixtures.

Prestianni has already served part of the ban, including a provisional suspension during Benfica’s European campaign.
