I recently had the pleasure of joining host Arvell “Mastrmynd” Poe for an episode of The INDIE Show, for an amazing experience that reminded me why the variety-show format still has an important place in today’s media landscape…and he’s sharp like Nipsey Russell (RIP – 2005)

I was pulled out of the greenroom in the middle of one heck of a laugh, exposed to a VERY energetic audience, and from the opening bell to the music spotlights, audience interaction, cultural debates, and competitive games, the episode moved with the energy of a classic late-night television program while maintaining a clear commitment to independent voices. Honestly, this appearance was the most fun I’ve had while still handling business.

Mastrmynd created an environment where serious industry conversations could coexist naturally with humor, music discovery, and spontaneous moments. That balance made the appearance feel less like a conventional interview and more like an evening spent exchanging ideas with someone genuinely interested in the person behind the professional title.

Thoughtful Questions Opened the Conversation

One of the things I appreciated most was the quality of Mastrmynd’s questions.

A strong interviewer does more than move through a list of prepared topics. The best conversations happen when a host listens closely, recognizes an unexpected opening, and allows the discussion to develop organically.

Mastrmynd gave me room to explain not only what I do as editor-in-chief of The Hype Magazine, but also how my background has shaped the way I approach journalism, leadership and service.

We discussed my journey as an award-winning journalist and retired combat veteran, along with the experiences that eventually led me to The Hype Magazine. Those chapters of my life may appear separate on paper, but each one taught me something about preparation, accountability, communication and responsibility.

Those lessons continue to influence how I evaluate stories, work with writers and engage with artists, publicists and other industry professionals.

During the interview, I discussed the importance of editorial integrity and the responsibility that comes with serving as a media gatekeeper.

Publications receive more pitches than they could reasonably cover. The challenge is not simply selecting the biggest name or the loudest campaign. It is recognizing which stories have substance, cultural relevance, and the potential to connect meaningfully with an audience.

How AI Supports My Editorial Workflow

Mastrmynd also asked about my daily workflow and how artificial intelligence fits into the modern newsroom.

With hundreds of emails arriving on a regular basis, efficiency is no longer optional. Artificial intelligence can help organize information, identify patterns, summarize materials and reduce the time spent on repetitive administrative tasks.

However, I do not view AI as a replacement for editorial judgment.

Technology can help process information, but it cannot replace lived experience, cultural awareness, professional relationships or the instinct developed through years of reporting and editing. The journalist still has to determine what matters, verify the facts and understand why a particular story deserves attention.

Used responsibly, AI gives editors more time to focus on the work that requires human discernment. Used carelessly, it can flatten stories and remove the personality that makes journalism meaningful.

That distinction continues to guide how I integrate new tools into my own process.

A Platform That Celebrates Independent Talent

The episode’s structure reinforced the show’s commitment to independent creators.

Music videos from artists including Tori Weldon and Le Zeppo were incorporated into the program, followed by direct discussion and critique. Those segments gave the audience an opportunity to discover new music while allowing the artists’ work to become part of the larger conversation.

I appreciated that the music was not treated as background decoration. It was given dedicated space within the show.

Independent artists need platforms willing to engage with the work rather than simply acknowledge that it exists. Thoughtful feedback, honest discussion and sustained exposure can be more valuable than a quick mention that disappears into a crowded social media feed.

The show’s format allowed music, commentary and personality to support one another.

Advice for Artists Pitching the Media

Toward the end of our conversation, Mastrmynd asked what independent artists should know when approaching The Hype Magazine.

My answer centered on clarity.

A strong pitch does not need to be complicated. It should tell the editor who the artist is, what the project is, why it matters and what materials are available.

Editors should not have to search through several paragraphs to identify the story. A clear subject line, concise introduction, working links, quality images and accurate release information can significantly improve an artist’s chances of receiving serious consideration.

The pitch should respect the recipient’s time while giving the project enough context to stand apart.

Artists should also understand the difference between promotion and storytelling. Saying a song is available is an announcement. Explaining the journey, meaning, cultural context or creative development behind that song creates the foundation for an editorial story.

The Fun of ‘Mastrmynd Games’

The conversation eventually shifted into the high-energy Mastrmynd Games segment, where my Hip Hop and pop culture knowledge was put to the test.

The competition added another dimension to the episode. After discussing journalism, technology and media responsibility, it was refreshing to enter a segment built around quick reactions, memory and friendly rivalry.

The game was competitive, unpredictable and genuinely entertaining. It got tense in the music title category; Mastrmynd tried it…he tried to slip in an extra strike, but the show producer JS1 showed his integrity and got on the mic to correct the misstatement of facts by his host…still and all, it came down to the last question for me to win an audience member a cash prize…#mustwatchtv

It also revealed something important about Mastrmynd’s hosting approach. He understands pacing. The interview was given room to become substantive, but the program never lost its sense of fun.

That quality is increasingly valuable in long-form digital programming. Audiences may arrive for a particular guest, but format and personality give them a reason to remain engaged.

Grits, Family Feud and the Human Side of Media

We debated the controversial subject of putting sugar in grits and heard stories about Mastrmynd’s experience appearing on Family Feud. Those exchanges had little to do with search engine optimization, newsroom management, or artist development, but they contributed greatly to the overall experience. They allowed the conversation to breathe.

Professional interviews can sometimes become so focused on accomplishments and talking points that the audience never gets to see the personalities involved. The lighter moments reminded viewers that meaningful media can be informative without becoming overly formal.

That combination of industry insight, independent music and good-natured debate gave the episode its variety-show atmosphere.

I am grateful to Mastrmynd and the entire team behind The INDIE Show for the invitation and the thoughtful presentation.

Mastrmynd asked informed questions, listened carefully to the answers, and created space for both serious reflection and genuine laughter. His ability to move between journalism, music, games and lifestyle conversation gave the episode a rhythm that felt natural rather than manufactured.
