After the party narrowed its finalists to Boston, Denver and Philadelphia, Dickens accused DNC Chair Ken Martin and Democratic leadership of making another choice that abandons the party’s base. “They are abandoning Atlanta, abandoning the south and once again abandoning black voters,” Dickens wrote. He called Atlanta “the black economic engine of the country and the cradle of the civil rights movement” and said passing over the city was not an accident but “an intentional choice.” Roland Martin put the decision against the party’s own history. Going back 124 years, Democrats have held their national convention in the South only twice, Houston in 1928 and Atlanta in 1988. The panel questioned why Democrats continue to lean toward familiar regions while the South remains central to Black political power and the party’s path to the White House. The DNC says its host-city process considers partnerships with local political, community and business leaders, logistical capacity, fundraising, Democratic values and the ability to host an event of this scale. The party also pointed to financial and organizing investments it says it has made across the South.
