Can you be in a committed relationship, go out with your friends, have an amazing night—and completely forget to call or text your partner? In this clip from 8 At The Table, the table gets into a surprisingly complicated relationship question: How much communication do you owe your partner when you’re out without them? The conversation starts with a simple scenario. You’re out with friends, you’re drinking, laughing, moving from place to place and having such a good time that the night gets away from you. Maybe your phone dies. Maybe you lose track of time. You don’t cheat. You don’t hook up with anybody. Nothing inappropriate necessarily happens—but you also don’t text, call or check in with the person waiting for you at home. Is that innocent fun, or is disappearing all night automatically disrespectful when you’re in a relationship? Some at the table admit they’ve had nights where they simply went with the moment and stopped thinking about everything else. Others make an important distinction between being single and being married: you can still enjoy yourself, but your spouse should know where you are. The conversation gets into trust, communication, boundaries, marriage, independence, going out with friends, relationship expectations and whether checking in with your partner is basic respect or unnecessary supervision. Because the real issue isn’t necessarily cheating. If your partner stays out until morning and nothing happened, are you still justified in being upset because they never contacted you? Does being married mean your spouse should always know where you are? And when does asking your partner to check in cross the line from consideration into control? Watch the full conversation and tell us: If your partner went out with friends, disappeared all night and came home the next morning saying their phone died—but swore nothing happened—would you believe them? And even if you did believe them, would you still consider it disrespectful?
