For Cali, the message is uncomplicated: Show up with intention or make room for someone who will.

But beneath the confidence of the record is an artist thinking seriously about much more than a single release.

In our conversation with Cali From New York, she opened up about creative intimacy, allowing listeners to define music for themselves, understanding when to delegate the business of a career, finding chemistry with collaborators and building something designed to last.

Creating Music for the Listener

From your point of view, what defines the core of your artistry and the message you aim to carry through your music?

My artistry is provocative and honest and my message changes as I do. I truly like to remain undefined so others can for themselves when they hear my music. I don’t think it truly matters what I think about it all. My music isn’t for me, it’s for them. My music is meant to be felt individually and tailored to each person.

There is an interesting freedom in that approach.

Rather than giving audiences instructions about what a song is supposed to mean, Cali leaves room for listeners to bring their own lives into the experience. Her responsibility, as she sees it, is to create the feeling. What happens after that belongs to the listener.

Intimacy as a Creative Fuel

When you step into the studio, what tends to drive your creativity the most, and how does that influence the direction of your sound?

Intimacy is my driving force when it comes to creativity. Not just sexual, but any connected moment or experience that I can draw from. It doesn’t always have to be my experience either. It can be fantasy or a story I heard from a stranger. As long as I can capture that feeling and emotion, that’s my goal.

That definition of intimacy gives Cali a considerably larger canvas.

A story does not have to be autobiographical to be truthful. It simply has to contain an emotion she can understand well enough to translate.

That ability to enter different emotional spaces has already helped distinguish one release from another.

Many artists say that the creative process can vary from project to project. What does that look like for you, and how do you stay in tune with your inspiration?

Yes, the creative process is different for each project and it should. My first single Goldilocks Love is a completely different story from my latest single Keep It Moving. They’re both connected with the commonality of the subject of love and relationships, but it’s a different feeling. For Goldilocks Love, I was able to tune into a feeling of bittersweet love. Something that had its good moments, but ultimately wasn’t the right thing for me. For “Keep It Moving”, I let the inspiration come from myself and people I’ve heard talk about their experiences with dating. It felt like people were losing faith in love so I had to call it like it is.

Building a Career Means Building a Team

There is also a practical side to Cali’s approach.

As artists increasingly find themselves expected to be musicians, marketers, content creators, strategists and business operators at the same time, she has embraced a lesson that can be difficult for emerging creatives to accept: doing everything yourself is not always a strength.

The music industry is constantly shifting. How do you approach the business side of your career, and what have you learned about navigating the industry effectively?

My job is to sing, write, rehearse, and be a force in everything I do. I’ve hired the best team to understand things I don’t do. I understand all the traps in the industry, but I know when to delegate so I can focus on creating to give. The best advice I’ve been given is to build a solid team and stop trying to do everything yourself. Have a solid foundation and everything else will build strong moving forward and up.

It is a philosophy focused not simply on productivity, but sustainability.

Cali is protecting the part of the process that requires something only she can provide: her creativity.

Chemistry Over Formula

That openness carries into collaboration as well.

For Cali, working with another artist is less about forcing a predetermined result and more about discovering what happens when two creative personalities occupy the same space.

Collaboration often brings new dimensions to an artist’s work. How do you choose your collaborators, and what do you look for when deciding to work with someone?

Oh, I’m a good time. I love to bring big energy into a room so it doesn’t matter who it is, the collaboration will be a great experience. It’s always fun to see their creative process and make something that I might not have on my own. I love when my voice compliments theirs and if it turns me on, then I know we did it right.

The same emphasis on connection extends to the people on the other side of the music.

Whether on stage or online, engagement is a major part of the modern music experience. What forms of connection with supporters feel most natural to you?

I love all forms of connection with anyone that supports my music. This is just the beginning, so I’m not picky, just grateful.

“Keep It Moving” Says What Dating Has Been Thinking

When the conversation turns back to her latest release, Cali’s directness comes sharply into focus.

“Keep It Moving” is rooted in the realities of contemporary dating, where intentions can become blurred by inconsistency, indecision and conversations that seemingly go everywhere except forward.

Cali decided to eliminate the ambiguity.

Every artist has a story behind a song that came from an unexpected place. Can you share a release of yours that was inspired by something wild or surprising?

My latest single, “Keep It Moving” is my energy this year. No confusion, no wasted time. Dating right now is so back-and-forth and this record is me setting the tone. If you love me, prove it, but if not, keep it moving. I went into this one confident and unapologetic, building something smooth but direct. It’s a breakup anthem, a glow-up anthem, whatever you need it to be. So many people are “over it” when it comes to dating these days. From unfaithfulness, to low-effort actions, and plenty of red flags, this a standout relatable record. The inspiration is constantly flowing.

That versatility may be one of the song’s strongest qualities.

Depending on who is listening, “Keep It Moving” can soundtrack the breakup, the recovery or the moment somebody finally decides they deserve better.

And because Cali intentionally leaves room for listeners to define her music through their own experiences, all three interpretations can coexist.

Longevity Over Momentary Fire

For an artist still writing the opening chapters of her career, Cali is already thinking beyond the immediate metrics surrounding a release.

The ambition is not simply to have a moment. It is to build a body of work and a relationship with listeners capable of surviving many of them.

As you think about the future, what areas of growth or exploration feel most meaningful to you in this phase of your career?

The most meaningful growth I can do is to constantly recalibrate and not be afraid to fail. I want to become the best for my fan base. I want my presentation to make people feel more understood by me. Something that’s unifying and inspiring. What’s meaningful to me is longevity, not just momentary fire.

That last distinction may say more about Cali From New York than any attempt to neatly categorize her sound.

The Brooklyn foundation is there. The Los Angeles evolution is there. So are the Motown, Jazz, Classical and Hip Hop influences that helped shape her musical vocabulary.

But Cali does not seem particularly interested in being confined by any of them.

She is building through feeling, connection and the willingness to change as the music changes with her.

For now, “Keep It Moving” provides the soundtrack.

The destination is still being written.
