Adwoa Beauty, the Black-owned textured haircare brand founded by Julian Addo, is facing a major legal and financial crisis that could force the company to shut down. The Dallas-based brand, known for clean, gender-neutral haircare for curls, coils, and kinks, was founded in 2017 by Addo, a Liberian-Ghanaian American entrepreneur with decades of experience in the hair industry. The brand built a strong following in the textured haircare space and became a Sephora-exclusive brand, with Sephora currently listing Adwoa Beauty as Black-owned, Clean at Sephora, cruelty-free, and designed for a wide range of hair textures. Court records show Adwoa Beauty LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Oct. 31, 2025, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas. The case was filed as a Subchapter V small-business reorganization, meaning the company was originally trying to restructure rather than immediately liquidate. The dispute centers on creditor Aurous Financial Services LLC. Aurous had already sued Adwoa Beauty and Addo in New Jersey federal court in October 2025 in a contract case. That lawsuit was later affected by the bankruptcy stay as to Adwoa Beauty, but the docket also shows continued action involving Addo personally, including a clerk’s entry of default against her in December 2025 and a deadline for Aurous to move for default judgment by April 30, 2026. The bankruptcy case has now taken a more serious turn. On April 27, 2026, the bankruptcy court denied Adwoa Beauty’s motion to use cash collateral. Then, on May 1, 2026, the court held a hearing on Aurous’ motion to convert the case from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 and granted the motion, with the court order still to be uploaded, according to docket listings. Chapter 7 typically means liquidation rather than reorganization.
