Barcelona are increasingly concerned that their pursuit of a new striker this summer could be complicated by Chelsea’s incoming manager Xabi Alonso, with the Spanish club prioritizing a deal for Joao Pedro as their leading option.

The Catalan side are in the market for a centre-forward following the confirmed departure of Robert Lewandowski and have already explored multiple targets as they look to reshape their attack.

Barcelona shift focus after Julián Álvarez setback

Barcelona initially identified Julián Álvarez as their preferred replacement for Lewandowski, but expectations within the club are that a deal for the Atletico Madrid striker will be extremely difficult to complete.

That situation forced a strategic pivot towards Pedro, with sporting director Deco already travelling to London for discussions with the player’s representatives.

Chelsea stance under Xabi Alonso creates uncertainty

The key complication for Barcelona is Chelsea’s evolving position under incoming manager Xabi.

Chelsea are reportedly open to demands in the region of €100m, but there is growing belief that Alonso will be decisive in whether any sale is sanctioned at all.

Barcelona fear the former Real Madrid midfielder could prioritise keeping Pedro as part of his long-term squad planning at Stamford Bridge.

    Deco forced into contingency planning

With two major targets now uncertain, Barcelona’s recruitment team may be forced to widen their striker shortlist if both Álvarez and Pedro prove unattainable.
