An anonymous text falsely claiming Shevrin Jones is HIV positive hit voters just 24 hours before Florida’s primary, turning an already high-stakes race into a vile smear fight. An anonymous text message falsely claiming Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones is HIV positive was sent to voters in Florida’s 24th Congressional District just before the primary. Roland Martin brings Jones on to break down what happened, where the text appeared to be targeted, and why the attack is so ugly. Jones says he does not have HIV, but makes clear that even if he did, it would not change his public service, his dignity, or his qualification to serve. He calls the smear the lowest thing he has seen in his political career and says it leans on the same old stigma that has long been weaponized against LGBTQ people. The conversation also widens to the bigger political stakes. Jones warns that Black political power in Miami-Dade is slipping away and says this seat represents the last Black-held seat in Florida represented by a Black person, as well as the state’s largest Black district. Roland and the panel also make clear that HIV status has nothing to do with someone’s ability to hold office, and that whoever sent the text was trying to weaponize fear, stigma and identity right before voters head to the polls. #RolandMartinUnfiltered #BlackStarNetwork #ShevrinJones #FloridaPrimary #HIVStigma #BlackPolitics Black Star Network Partner: Chapter Chapter and its affiliates are not connected with or endorsed by any government entity or the federal Medicare program.
