Should you take advice from someone whose own life doesn’t reflect what they’re telling you to do? In this throwback clip from 8 At The Table, Erin The Renegade, Amanda, Romeo and Rico Hundo debate bad advice, unsolicited opinions, failure, success, accountability and one uncomfortable question: does someone have to be successful at something before they can teach you about it? The conversation gets interesting when the table asks whether a broke person can teach someone how to become rich. If they’ve made financial mistakes and understand exactly where they went wrong, could their failures actually make their advice valuable? Or eventually do their words stop carrying weight because they’re constantly telling other people what to do without applying those same lessons to their own life? Rico takes the conversation further by explaining why people sometimes stop listening to someone they once respected. You can continue giving advice, but if people don’t see your actions matching your words, eventually they may question your credibility altogether. Then there’s another side of the debate: what happens when somebody gives you advice you simply don’t want to hear? Is that person actually hating on you—or are they telling you an uncomfortable truth that your friends are afraid to say? This conversation breaks down the difference between wisdom and experience, advice and judgment, constructive criticism and hate, and why some of the most valuable lessons can come from people who made the exact mistakes you’re trying to avoid. Watch the full conversation and tell us in the comments: Would you take financial advice from someone who’s broke? Relationship advice from someone whose relationships never work? And does someone have to live the life they’re recommending before you’ll listen to them?
