Morph is not who you think he is! If you thought this fan-favorite from X-Men The Animated Series and X-Men '97 was just a standard comic book adaptation, think again. In this episode of Only Comics, we break down the wild, real-world history behind Morph's creation. He actually started out in the comics back in 1967 as a shapeshifting villain named Changeling, who eventually impersonated Professor X and was killed off in battle. When the 90s animated series showrunners needed to kill an X-Man in the pilot episode to establish high stakes, they originally picked Thunderbird before pivoting to the long-dead Changeling. But there was a massive legal roadblock: DC Comics held the active trademark for "Changeling" thanks to Beast Boy from the Teen Titans! To dodge a massive lawsuit, Marvel rebranded the character as Morph, and a legend was born. We also dive deep into the exact rules of Morph's power set. Why can he copy the Hulk's dense muscle mass and Deadpool's cellular healing factor, but he can't shoot Cyclops' optic blasts or summon Storm's lightning? We break down exactly why his abilities are strictly limited to physical mutations and exclude energy or telepathy. Finally, we track how the comic version of Changeling stayed dead for over 40 years, only to be resurrected in the 2025 Krakoan era—redesigned to look and act exactly like the cartoon version of Morph.
