Your child turns 18. Are they officially on their own—or does being a parent mean helping them until they’re actually prepared for the world? In this 8 At The Table reaction to Mojo Brooks’ Club Shay Shay conversation, the table debates a parenting tradition that immediately divides generations: kicking children out of the family home when they turn 18. The argument starts with a provocative question about Black families: if parents already know how difficult adulthood can be, why send an 18-year-old into that world when you know they aren’t financially or emotionally prepared to survive on their own? One parent recalls the mentality bluntly: “Your 18th birthday—you’ve got 30 days.” But is that independence—or are parents making adulthood unnecessarily harder? The conversation becomes even more controversial when the table admits there may be a different standard for sons and daughters. Some parents are comfortable allowing their daughters to remain home longer while expecting their sons to leave earlier, become independent and “figure it out.” Should becoming a man require leaving your parents’ house? And should a 25- or even 30-year-old daughter be treated differently? Then there’s a reality previous generations didn’t necessarily face in the same way: today’s cost of living. With housing, rent and everyday expenses putting pressure on both young adults and their parents, multigenerational households may become less about children refusing to grow up and more about families combining incomes to survive and build financial stability. So what actually makes more sense? Kick them out at 18 and force independence—or let them stay, contribute financially, save money and prepare before leaving? Parents: At what age should your child be expected to move out—18, 21, 25, 30, or whenever they’re financially ready? And here’s the harder question: Would your answer be different for your SON than your DAUGHTER?
